Written 10th May 13, directly influenced by Bobby's Romani Veniunt!, making me think I could mine my love of Greek mythology to similar effect. However rather than producing a comparable epic, I instead came up with a lengthy set of couplets that fit strangely well to a rather silly faux hip-hop number I'd tossed off 9 years prior.
This was only performed once by oddballs, during our marathon A-Z show at Scream Lounge, but I liked it enough to try and cobble together a recording in the spring of 14.
I first dropped the single on 20th Mar 14, but listening back it sounded rather rushed, so I decided to pick it up, give it new vocals, guitars and a spring clean and place it down somewhat more carefully this time on it's 5 year anniversary.
lyrics
Dreaming of the sunshine, of a beautiful day
Thinking of the fun times that she had on the way
To her current condition, her incarceration
Her unique position in this strange situation
Back in Ancient Greece the dating game was crazy
They'd promise you Olympus but put you through Hades
Down with the chthonian, never got lonely
Basking in the awesome glory of Persephone
Daughter of the gods, held above all other girls
told me all about her life before the underworld
A heavenly childhood free from worries and woe
Why the Fates conspired against her, we'll never know
When she came of age, all the guys tried to woo her
She refused to engage, but had a secret pursuer
Hades hadn't opted for traditional seduction
Suspecting he'd have more success with abduction
In the fields of Nysa, she picked flowers with her ladies
Concealed beneath her, that old devil called Hades
He burst through the ground, dispersed her aides
And dragged her back to his kingdom, to be Queen of the Shades
Dreaming of the sunshine…
This daughter of Demeter, a radiant creature,
And everyone's favourite pomegranate seed eater
Ended up below cos she was shafted by Zeus
(Not literally cos that would be like child abuse)
But it's still weird to offer your brother your daughter's hand
And naturally her mother took her grief out on the land
Crops failed, driving the cost of food to epic heights
The citadel rocked to the Athenian riots
People were starving and the tributes had grown lean
To pacify Demeter Zeus had to intervene
Forced Hades to release her, but Hades had been slick
And fed his lady 4 seeds, a nifty trick
For in the Kingdom of the Dead, any morsel that's consumed
Stops the eater ever leaving so our heroine was doomed
To spend 4 months of every year in the kingdom below
That's why Demeter mourns each winter causing nothing to grow
